How we choose and how we're paid. We list tools that work for UK online sellers and, where they file to HMRC, appear on HMRC's software list. We include free options and tools that pay us nothing. Some links may become affiliate links, which means we're paid if you sign up. We'll mark those, and it doesn't change what you pay or the order of this page.
1. Start with HMRC's own finder
HMRC keeps the official list of software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You can filter it by what you need, such as sole trader income, property income or free options. It's free, and it's the only list that's always complete.
GOV.UK: Find software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
HMRC doesn't offer free software of its own. Free products on the list are usually aimed at simple cases and may not have bank feeds or invoicing.
2. Making Tax Digital software
For sole traders who keep digital records and send quarterly updates from 6 April 2027. Not sure if that's you? Read our guide or take the 1-minute test.
FreeAgent
Free with some bank accounts- Cost: free with a NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank business current account, or with Mettle if you make at least one transaction a month. Otherwise £19 a month excluding VAT for sole traders, with a lower introductory price.
- Making Tax Digital: sends quarterly updates and your final return to HMRC.
- Good to know: the sales connectors in section 3 don't link to FreeAgent, so marketplace sellers enter or import sales another way.
Xero or QuickBooks
Works with sales connectors- Cost: monthly plans. Check the current sole trader plan and price on their sites.
- Making Tax Digital: check the plan you choose is on HMRC's list for Income Tax.
- Good to know: Link My Books and A2X both connect to Xero and QuickBooks, so these suit sellers on several marketplaces.
A spreadsheet with bridging software
If you like spreadsheets- How it works: you keep records in a spreadsheet, and bridging software sends the figures to HMRC.
- The rule: the spreadsheet and the software must be digitally linked. Copying figures across by hand isn't allowed.
- Where to find it: HMRC's finder above lists bridging products.
3. Sales-to-books connectors
Marketplaces pay you after taking fees and refunds. A connector splits each payout back into sales, fees and refunds, so your records show your real turnover, which is the figure that decides Making Tax Digital and VAT.
Link My Books
14-day free trial- Sells on: Amazon, eBay, Shopify, Etsy, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, Walmart and Square.
- Connects to: Xero and QuickBooks.
- Cost: priced by orders per month. Use the calculator on their pricing page.
A2X
Free trial- Sells on: Amazon, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Etsy, eBay, PayPal and Walmart.
- Connects to: Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite.
- Cost: from US$29 a month for most channels, priced in dollars.
Selling on Vinted or Depop? Neither connector lists them, so record those sales yourself from your sales history, not your payouts.
4. When software isn't enough
If you sell on several platforms and the figures won't reconcile, sell to the EU, or are close to the £90,000 VAT threshold, an accountant can set things up properly. Try ICAEW's directory to find one.
This page lists software, not tax advice. We haven't tested every feature for every situation. Check the provider's site and HMRC's list before you choose.
